What Is A G-Sync Gaming Monitor?

If you’ve started researching new gaming monitors you’ve probably seen the word “G-Sync” repeatedly but you don’t know why they’re so costly and more importantly are they worth the cost?

What is G-sync?

G-Sync is a technology created by Nvidia that’s used in selected models of monitors, tv’s and laptops.

The main goal that the technology is trying to achieve is to give the user a smooth and stable experience especially during gameplay of fast paced games including first person shooters.

The dynamic refresh rate of the G-sync technology allows the monitor to match its frames per seconds to the graphics card. Due to this screen tear will be prevented.

Why is G-Sync so expensive?

What’s built in to these monitors are superior to a lot of what’s available on today’s’ market. You’re basically paying more for a more premium product with better built in technology.

These monitors will give you the most smooth gameplay in 2020 due to its variable refresh rate.

Is there an alternative to G-Sync?

Freesync is an inferior technology to the G-Sync however it’s built with the same goals in mind to reduce screen tear and enhance the smoothness of a gaming session via their displays.

G-Sync is built in via a chip that’s solely built for the purpose of G-Sync however Freesync uses the video card to control the refresh rate of your display.

Due to this quite large difference in how the two are applied there’s in turn quite a difference in results where the Freesync just isn’t quite as good.

Is my PC compatible with a G-Sync monitor?

To use a G-Sync monitor with a desktop PC, you need:

Driver R340.52 or higher

To use a G-Sync monitor with a laptop, you need:

Windows 10, 8.1 or 7
A GTX 980M, 970M, 965M or higher graphics card
DisplayPort 1.2 directly from the graphics card
Driver R340.52 or higher

To use a G-Sync Ultimate monitor with a desktop PC, you need:

Windows 10
GTX 1050 or higher graphics card
DisplayPort 1.4 directly from the graphics card
Driver R396 GA2 or higher

To use a G-Sync Ultimate monitor with a laptop, you need:

Windows 10
GTX 1050 or higher graphics card
DisplayPort 1.4 directly from the graphics card
Driver R396 GA2 or higher

Should I buy a G-Sync gaming monitor?

If you’re looking for a 4k smooth gaming experience and budget isn’t a concern then i’d personally opt for a G-sync monitor.

If your budget is slightly lower and you like the concept of the variable refresh rate on the monitor however haven’t got the budget then i’d opt for the freesync.

G-Sync is the superior market leader and it is worth the money and many users are finding in 2021 that lower cost models are starts to be released.
